From Laboratory Diagnostics to Digital Patient Care

Preventis was founded in 2003 and has its roots in laboratory diagnostics. In the beginning, we focused on making diagnostic information available faster and developed qualitative rapid tests for use at the point of care. Yet not every diagnostic question can be answered with a simple positive or negative result. In chronic diseases in particular, quantitative values are often needed. This challenge becomes especially apparent in people with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. When a flare-up is suspected, the calprotectin level provides important information for further assessment. For a long time, obtaining this value involved a lengthy process: visiting the practice, collecting a test kit, taking a stool sample at home, sending the sample to a laboratory and then waiting for the result. This led us to a central question: Why should a quantitative measurement be tied exclusively to a laboratory? This question marked the beginning of our SmarTest technology. In 2015, we reached an important milestone with our first smartphone-assisted quantitative calprotectin rapid test: results within 15 minutes, directly at home, with the option to share them digitally with the treating center. This created new possibilities for integrating home-based diagnostics into telemedical care. Since then, we have continued to develop this approach, expanding the SmarTest product range to enable quantitative measurement of additional biomarkers.

Quantifying Rapid Test Results

With SmarTest, the smartphone camera functions as an optical test reader. The app analyses the colour intensity of the test strip and converts it into a numerical result – going beyond a visual positive-or-negative assessment at home and at the point of care.
